THE ERMAN BROTHERS

Detroit Bred | Tucson Grown

From sibling rivals to business partners, the Erman brothers’ path to this point has been unscripted. They are the sons and grandsons of tinkerers, enthusiasts, and merchants. Their father inherited the workshop of his father who owned a furniture business in Detroit called Erman’s Bedroom Center, and their great-grandparents emigrated from Eastern Europe to the U.S. in the early 1900s in search of better lives.

Mark, 44, majored in geology at the University of Michigan, then worked as a geologist at Bureau Veritas, a global environmental consulting firm. He returned to school at Wayne State University Law School, graduating cum laude in 2007, and practiced environmental law in Detroit at Troutman Pepper, a national firm. During this time, while homebrewing beer, the brothers began pondering a venture. After visiting Tucson with its mountains, stars and community, Mark relocated with his family in 2011. He serves as general counsel and creative director for the enterprise, charting direction, drafting plans, securing financing and permits, and handling construction oversight. He enjoys outdoor exploration, rocks, writing, and time for reflection.

Eric, 38, majored in psychology at the University of Michigan, following his passion for beer into the commercial brewing industry. He honed his craft as a brewer in Detroit, Denver, Boulder, and Portland before moving to Tucson to launch Ermanos. With his mechanical and technical foundation, Eric continues to be driven as a life-long learner in pursuit of new skills and wisdom as director of operations, community relations, and marketing, among other roles. He is equanimous, energetic, and leads nearly 50 employees with warmth, integrity, and humor. Eric enjoys chess, photography, music, and nature.

The Erman brothers are currently developing a new hospitality concept called ALIGN. Ermanos and Portal have been successful experiments proving the benefits of enhanced social environments for our well being. With ALIGN, the brothers have been reflecting on what is needed, diving deep into a realm of hospitality where restorative, communal environments intersect genuine service to the whole.

The brothers lead a collaborative organization founded on relationships and equity. They love the Sonoran Desert community and are exuberant and honored to be part of the monumental undertaking ahead.

Ermanos Bar (2015) was the beginning of the brothers’ journey into architecture in hospitality. The space received two AIA awards for interior architecture.

Portal Cocktails, a cozy space designed to evoke happiness and connection with others, opened in 2020. The space was featured in Interior Design magazine, a finalist in the London-based international Bar & Restaurant Design Awards, and awarded the 2022 Interior Architecture Citation by AIA Arizona.
